NYC History

The European history of New York City started with the Florentine navigator
Giovanni da Verrazano in 1524 as he sailed into New York harbor on the
French vessel Dauphine.

Undoubtedly his audience of Native Americans watched from the shores of
what is now Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Manhattan in innocent awe of these
canvas sailed vessels.

Current evidence tells us that the tribe that inhabited this area at the time of the
first European  explorations had already been here for 1500 years.

Over 80 years later, in 1609 the Englishman Henry Hudson in service to the
Dutch East India Company finally sailed up the river that now bears his name.

Woodlands loaded with beaver and other fur bearing animals, rivers and
streams overflowing with fish, and fertile fields  lured farmers, trappers,
merchants and opportunists from Holland, and England.

Follow  us as we take you from the Lenape Indians, to Lord Cornbury, the first
transvestite governor of New York, through the American Revolution to the
present incorporated city of the five boros.
